As part of the Catalonia External Chemical Sector Emergency Plan (Plaseqcat), Terrassa has taken a decisive step in protecting its citizens by installing three public warning sirens for chemical risk alerts. This strategic action enhances the early warning system against potential industrial incidents and aligns with Catalonia’s comprehensive risk prevention and management policies.
Active protection against chemical threats
Terrassa’s integration into the Plaseqcat network is driven by the presence of various chemical-handling industries within the municipality. This industrial landscape demands a coordinated and technologically advanced response to minimize the potential consequences of serious chemical accidents.
The newly deployed siren system enables rapid alerts to the public in the event of a relevant chemical incident, helping to activate self-protection measures such as shelter-in-place procedures.
Strategic location and system coverage
The three sirens have been strategically positioned across the city to ensure optimal sound coverage:
Venus Street, at the intersection with Apolo Street
Central promenade of Europa Street, near Alemanya Street
Esla Street, inside the Eco-Equip municipal company premises
Each siren has an acoustic coverage radius of approximately 843 meters, ensuring efficient alert distribution across critical industrial zones.
Autonomous technology and CECAT integration
These sirens are mounted on 11-meter-high vertical structures and powered autonomously by integrated photovoltaic panels. Each unit also includes a weather monitoring station, providing real-time atmospheric data.
The entire system is connected to Catalonia’s Coordination Center for Operational Emergencies (CECAT), which can remotely trigger alerts. Additionally, a backup console has been installed at the Municipal Alarm Receiving Center, located within the Terrassa Municipal Police communications hub.
A key step in risk management
The deployment of these sirens marks a significant improvement in Terrassa’s civil protection strategy and exemplifies how technology can be integrated into urban environments to safeguard lives and health.
At Lafcarr, we welcome every initiative that contributes to more efficient risk management and remain committed to designing and implementing advanced early warning solutions at both local and regional levels.
