A pilot test of flood early warning in Gandia brings technology closer to those who need it most

Last week, Lafcarr collaborated with the Gandia City Council to deploy our flood early warning siren system as part of a local technical demonstration. The objective was to validate acoustic coverage and remote activation in response to sudden floods caused by heavy rainfall.

The pilot specifically tested the flood alert tone, allowing municipal technicians, local police and emergency services to assess the clarity and reach of the initial warning. Although the focus was on flooding, the system is equally capable of issuing alerts for wildfires and technological incidents, offering a comprehensive civil protection solution.

Reliable and easy-to-understand alert technology

During the demonstration, predefined tones were triggered, accompanied by short voice messages identifying the emergency — for example, “Attention: flood alert” — broadcast via one of our electronic sirens. This allowed local authorities and technical teams to evaluate audibility, message intelligibility and remote triggering performance.

These real-world tests help verify the system’s ability to integrate into municipal emergency plans and reinforce traditional communication channels during critical situations.

A high-risk flood zone

Gandia is particularly exposed to flooding. Its proximity to the sea, presence of ravines and riverbeds, and terrain that facilitates water accumulation make it vulnerable to intense rain events.

In recent years, the city has faced several severe DANA episodes (isolated high-altitude depressions). In addition to the well-known 2019 DANA, October 2024 brought one of the most destructive storms in the Valencian Community, causing tragic consequences and extreme rainfall that led to flash floods in multiple towns.

These events underline the need for early warning systems with sirens, capable of delivering clear, immediate and audible alerts — even when mobile networks or digital platforms are compromised.
