On Monday, the Guatemalan Outdoor Advertising Chamber (Capegua) announced during a municipal meeting that 22 early warning sirens will be installed throughout Guatemala City. These systems are designed to issue evacuation alerts in the event of natural disasters such as earthquakes or volcanic eruptions.

The pilot phase began with the installation of the first siren on Calzada Roosevelt. Thirteen more will follow, with the final plan aiming to deploy the full network across all 22 zones of the capital.

The sirens will be mounted on elevated advertising structures, strategically positioned to maximize coverage and sound reach.

This project is part of the city’s preventive plan, which includes emergency drills in neighborhoods, buildings, churches, and public spaces to help citizens respond effectively in case of emergencies.

Additionally, 800 young volunteers—known as “Águilas” (Eagles)—will form a rapid-response team trained to assist the public during risk situations. These volunteers will focus on the 171 vulnerable areas identified within the city.

Capegua highlighted that the sirens will use sensor-based technology, allowing for automated activation, similar to systems used in countries like Mexico.

The initiative seeks to build a culture of prevention, ensure timely evacuation, and coordinate emergency response services across Guatemala City.
