On Monday, May 13th, several municipalities in Bizkaia —Abanto, Muskiz, Zierbena, and Ortuella— activated their acoustic sirens as part of a chemical emergency drill coordinated by the Basque Government. The exercise is part of the PLASEQTA (External Emergency Plan), aimed at responding to potential industrial chemical incidents.

Lafcarr: Technology and Continuity Since 2007
Lafcarr has played a strategic role in the development of Euskadi’s chemical emergency siren system for over 15 years:
- In 2007, we integrated redundant remote control via the Basque Government’s TETRA network.
- We carried out several years of maintenance on the acoustic systems.
- In 2011, we migrated the control software to our proprietary system COMSIR, which currently manages all sirens through dual redundant servers.
- Today, we collaborate with the current maintenance provider to ensure full system availability and reliability.
- Additionally, we supplied and installed some of the sirens directly — such as in the Port of Bilbao (Santurtzi) area.
Smart Warning Systems to Protect Lives
The sirens triggered during this drill are part of an integrated civil protection network designed to:
- 🔊 Emit high-power audible warnings and voice messages.
- 🌐 Be remotely activated from central control hubs.
- ⚙️ Work seamlessly with platforms like SOS Deiak and other emergency protocols.
- 🔁 Provide redundancy and secure communication in critical scenarios.
The first activations already took place last Friday, confirming proper functionality ahead of the public drill.
