Emergency sirens activated during the Puertollano External Emergency Plan drill
On 26 October 2016 a drill of the External Emergency Plan (PEEP) was held at the Puertollano petrochemical complex. During the exercise, the seven public warning sirens were activated from the Local Control Centre at the Local Police Headquarters.
The activation was carried out by on-duty officers specifically trained under the Operational Communication Protocol signed between Puertollano Town Council and the Directorate-General for Public Protection of the Regional Government of Castilla-La Mancha.
Siren activation protocol
The sirens can be activated by either the Local Police or the Municipal Civil Protection Coordinator. The system is also backed up at SAU-112, ensuring it works even if there are problems at the local command centre.
Lafcarr: 24/7 maintenance and remote control
Lafcarr Project & Design, which specialises in warning and remote control systems, maintains and remotely monitors the sirens from its headquarters in Vilablareix (Girona). This support means the system can be activated at any time, guaranteeing an immediate response to industrial or chemical emergencies.
This comprehensive approach, combining local and remote control, strengthens preventive safety for the facilities and the public in the event of incidents around the petrochemical complex.
Drills that save lives
Regular exercises like the one in Puertollano are part of the PEEP implementation plans. They ensure that everyone involved —security forces, technical staff and the public— knows the procedures for real emergencies.
