New acoustic warning system at the Buseo reservoir (Valencia) to strengthen safety in emergencies

The Buseo reservoir lies in the municipality of Chera (Valencia), within the Chera–Sot de Chera Natural Park.
Owned by the Júcar River Basin Authority (CHJ), the reservoir now has a new audible public warning system designed and installed by Lafcarr as part of the implementation of the Buseo Dam Emergency Plan (PEP) promoted by the Valencian Regional Government.

The project aims to improve safety and the ability to respond to emergencies, ensuring effective communication with people in the main affected area, covering Sot de Chera and its surroundings.

Six electronic sirens to alert the public

The audible warning system consists of six high-power electronic sirens, strategically located around the dam and in the inhabited areas downstream.
Each siren is solar-powered with dual backup batteries, so it keeps working even during power cuts.

Advanced management with iDAM

The system is managed through iDAM, Lafcarr's own software for end-to-end management of early warning and dam safety systems.
In this project, iDAM brings together several modules to control the siren system, monitor the reservoir in real time and centralise all the technical and operational information linked to the Emergency Plan.

Thanks to its modular architecture, the platform will also automate dam monitoring and manage a new reservoir level sensor, ensuring continuous, accurate surveillance of hydraulic conditions.

The system also includes a Mobile Emergency Room that replicates the main functions of the control centre and allows warnings to be issued locally if communications are lost, ensuring redundancy and operational reliability.

Preventing hydraulic and weather-related risks

Although the sirens are not triggered directly by heavy rain or DANA (cut-off low) events, they improve the ability to respond to hydraulic risk scenarios that can be made worse by extreme weather.

In recent years, these events have shown the need to modernise dams, update their emergency plans and have effective warning systems that contribute to public safety.

Lafcarr's experience and commitment in dam safety

With more than 20 years' experience developing early warning systems, Lafcarr designs, manufactures and integrates complete solutions for dams, coastal areas and industrial sites, combining electronic sirens, sensors, secure communications and software integration.

The Buseo reservoir project adds to other recent projects at Foix, La Baells, Sau and Llauset, establishing Lafcarr as a benchmark in public warning technology in Spain and Portugal.

Natural setting and geography

The Buseo reservoir, in an area of great environmental and scenic value, is part of the Chera–Sot de Chera Natural Park.
As well as its hydraulic role, it is popular with hikers and visitors, which is why reliable warning systems are key to keeping residents and tourists safe.

Testing the audible warning system

On 7 October 2025, the official test of the audible warning system installed by Lafcarr at the Buseo reservoir (Chera, Valencia) was carried out under the Dam Emergency Plan. All six electronic sirens were activated, validating their coverage and performance in real conditions. Here you can hear how the sirens sounded and see how the test went:
