On 30 September 2025, the sirens of the new tsunami warning system in the municipality of Loulé (Algarve) were activated for the first time during the project's validation phase.
Portugal's southern coast now has a dedicated protection system for this risk, after Lafcarr installed seven electronic sirens and a control centre in Vilamoura and Quarteira. The project, commissioned by Proteção Civil, improves public safety with a reliable audible system run from the local fire station.
A safety project in the Algarve
The system consists of 7 high-power electronic sirens strategically placed to cover the most exposed stretches of coast. All are connected to a control centre at Loulé fire station, from where Proteção Civil can monitor and trigger warnings when needed.
The work, carried out entirely by Lafcarr, is complete and in service. The siren activation took place before Portuguese officials and media as part of the project's public launch.

Technology used: COMSIR
For operation and remote control, COMSIR, Lafcarr's own software for centralised management of electronic sirens, has been deployed. With COMSIR, the teams in charge can:
- Activate the sirens remotely or locally.
- Monitor in real time the status of each siren.
- Ensure high availability of communications and operation.
COMSIR is designed for a fast, coordinated response by Proteção Civil and the fire service, supporting emergency procedures in urban and coastal areas.
Training and media coverage
The project included specialist training for Proteção Civil and the Loulé fire service, ensuring consistent operation and familiarity with activation and test protocols.
The roll-out received TV coverage in Portugal, raising public awareness of tsunami risk and the importance of public warning systems.
Tsunami risk prevention in Portugal
Portugal, especially its Atlantic and southern coasts, is exposed to tsunami risk. Audible warning systems can alert large numbers of people immediately, enabling orderly evacuation and risk reduction. With this installation in Vilamoura and Quarteira, Loulé strengthens its emergency prevention and response capability.
