Lisbon Strengthens Tsunami Preparedness with a High-Tech Alert System in the Tagus Estuary

Portugal strengthens its natural disaster prevention strategy with the deployment of a cutting-edge tsunami alert system in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area. This initiative significantly improves early detection capabilities for a potential tsunami in Portugal, especially in the densely populated and seismically vulnerable Tagus Estuary. The system was commissioned shortly after the region experienced a 4.9-magnitude earthquake—Lisbon’s most significant seismic event in over two decades. Authorities responded swiftly by reinforcing public safety with fast, effective risk communication infrastructure.

What Does the New Tsunami Alert System Include?

This robust and scalable infrastructure is designed to issue alerts within seconds. It includes:

  • Four high-power electronic sirens covering the Lisbon bay area.
  • Two redundant control centers with expansion capabilities.
  • A resilient telecommunications network engineered for extreme conditions.
  • Full integration with the existing tsunami warning system in Cascais.

Acoustic studies and technical assessments will determine the best placement of components across 18 municipalities.

Why Portugal Is Preparing for the Next Tsunami

This urgent project reflects growing concern among scientists and authorities over the likelihood of a large-scale event, similar to the catastrophic 1755 Lisbon earthquake and tsunami. Experts emphasize that another tsunami in Portugal is not a question of “if,” but “when.”

“A disaster like that of 1755 is not a question of if, but when,” warned José Luís Zêzere from the Institute of Geography and Spatial Planning.

Early warning technologies are now essential to public safety, enabling rapid evacuation and coordinated emergency response.

Lafcarr: Engineering for Real-Time Tsunami Risk Management

At Lafcarr, we develop integrated early warning systems for natural and technological hazards, combining acoustic engineering, resilient communications, and intelligent software. Our technologies are already helping protect vulnerable areas at risk of a tsunami in Portugal and across Europe.

One of our core platforms is iDAM—a modular, scalable software suite designed for complete monitoring and control of warning systems. It enables real-time event tracking, automated multi-hazard responses, and centralized decision-making from control centers or mobile devices.

The Lisbon project underscores Lafcarr’s capacity to deliver agile, high-impact solutions that enhance community resilience in coastal zones.

Is Your Municipality Ready for a Tsunami in Portugal?

Evaluating exposure and readiness for a potential tsunami in Portugal is no longer optional—it’s essential. Lafcarr works with municipalities, public agencies, and critical infrastructure to implement customized early warning solutions.
