On Friday, May 20th, a test activation of population warning sirens took place in several Galician towns, as part of the Emergency Plan of the Eiras dam, with the aim of ensuring its operability and the recognition of the sound of Lafcarr sirens.
The drill took place at 11:30 in the morning, without affecting the daily activity of the residents, in the towns of Fornelos de Montes, Ponte Caldelas, Soutomaior, and Pontevedra. The main objective of the Emergency Plan for the Eiras dam is to increase the safety guarantees already offered by the dam itself, anticipating possible problems that may occur. One of the main measures offered by the Plan is the installation of a network of five Lafcarr sirens within the area that would be affected by a dam break.
The test involved collaboration from the Directorate General of Emergencies and Interior of Augas de Galicia, technicians from the Hydraulic Administration, members of Civil Protection, and Lafcarr personnel.
This exercise was accompanied by information to the population about the contents of the Plan, including an informative talk and the distribution of brochures and posters in the respective municipalities. Thanks to these actions, residents are informed and prepared with the measures to be applied in case of an incident, in addition to ensuring effective coordination between administrations and companies to guarantee safety in the area.
