Lafcarr Project & Design, together with the Girona Region Patient Transport Consortium and the University of Girona (UdG), has developed IrisAmb, the most modern and advanced patient transport management system in Europe. Based on artificial intelligence, it can schedule the 700 non-emergency patient transport services carried out each day in the province of Girona in just three minutes.
This pioneering project is the result of collaboration between the Girona Patient Transport Consortium, Lafcarr and the UdG's eXiT group. With an investment of €150,000 and a year and a half of development, IrisAmb is already installed in the 80 non-emergency ambulances operating in the region.
The project began in 2008, when the Consortium identified the need to give ambulances tools to optimise logistics. Lafcarr, a Vilablareix-based technology consultancy and engineering firm, then began developing the device.
Researchers from the eXiT group (Control Engineering and Intelligent Systems) at the UdG's Institute of Informatics and Applications —Javier Murillo, Victor Muñoz and Albert Arroyo, led by Beatriz López and Carlos Pozos— helped design an AI-based router capable of human-like reasoning.
The system takes into account more than a hundred parameters, such as vehicle type, whether the transfer is individual or shared, the patient's location and destination, and whether a driver, technician or other technical requirements are needed. As a result, IrisAmb automatically schedules the 700 daily services of CTS Girona Region in just three minutes. Each ambulance automatically receives its route and assigned services for the day on its IRIS device.
As well as saving time and resources, IrisAmb ensures strict compliance with current patient transport regulations. This intelligent planning capability makes IrisAmb the most advanced patient transport management system in Europe today.
The project adds to Lafcarr's innovative solutions for smart mobility and technology-driven emergency management.
