This pilot project will be tested this summer, and the emergency system being installed will be used solely and exclusively by the beach's lifeguard, safety and emergency service. The aim is to have an installation that can inform beach users of dangerous situations or emergencies, such as sea-state risks, which are currently signalled with flags. The public address system will also allow emergency warnings to be given in several languages. For example, in the event of an oil spill, in addition to the usual measures of cordoning off the affected area, bathers can be warned over the loudspeakers.
Calonge Town Council intends to roll out this new service on all the municipality's beaches (es Monestrí, Sant Antoni, Torre Valentina and cala Cristus – ses Torretes), so this year will serve as a pilot ahead of studying its introduction on the other beaches.
Vilablareix-based Lafcarr Project & Design specialises mainly in telecommunications.
Work where safety comes first
The device makes the beach safer, can be used in emergencies and will improve communication with bathers. According to the mayor, Jordi Soler, the beaches are important: they are a first-rate tourist attraction, which is why every year the council tries to improve all beach-related services: cleaning, access and information.
