Tsunami Alert System for the Population of Chipiona – Tsunami Ready (UNESCO‑IOC)
Implantación de un sistema de alerta acústica para riesgo de inundación
Lafcarr Project & Design successfully implemented an acoustic warning system for tsunami risk situations in the town of Chipiona, located on the coast of Cádiz, Spain. This system is part of Chipiona’s recognition as a UNESCO Tsunami Ready municipality, reinforcing coastal safety and civil protection readiness.
System Description
The project included the installation of 4 electronic sirens covering the entire affected area. These sirens are strategically located in key access points and critical zones.
Installed locations:
- Paseo Marítimo (near Monumento a la Luz)
- Puerto de Chipiona (fishing port)
- Plaza at Nuestra Señora de Regla Sanctuary
- La Laguna area (periurban park)
Platforms and Communications
To ensure maximum system efficiency and reliability, a fully redundant data control and transmission architecture was established.
Key components:
- CECOP (Operational Coordination Center of Chipiona): Single control point for alarm reception and siren activation.
- Integration with 112 Andalucía: Alerts are sent via RESTful API simultaneously to the 112 emergency number, ensuring intermunicipal coordination.
- 99% Operational Availability: Redundant architecture to maintain functionality even in adverse conditions.
Alert Transmission Channels
This initiative significantly increases public safety and awareness in Chipiona, offering real-time tsunami alerts to protect both residents and tourists. It also connects modern risk management technology to historical context — such as the 1755 Cádiz tsunami, which devastated the region.
