🔊 Bescanó strengthens its flood warning system with a new strategic siren

Siren no. 14 installed in Bescanó under the Susqueda and El Pasteral dams emergency plan

Bescanó has added a new emergency siren as part of the Emergency Plan for the Susqueda and El Pasteral dams. This brings to 14 the number of devices installed in the public warning system designed for a rapid response to a serious hydraulic incident. The news was also reported by Diari de Girona.

17-siren network in the final stage of deployment

The plan, promoted by Endesa and coordinated with Civil Protection and the Catalan Water Agency, provides for 17 sirens in the following municipalities:

Municipality Sirens installed
Amer 5
Anglès 2
Bescanó 3
La Cellera de Ter 2
Osor 3
Sant Julià de Llor i Bonmatí 1
Susqueda 1

The remaining three sirens will be installed in Amer and Sant Julià de Llor i Bonmatí in the coming months. The network is expected to be fully operational during the second half of 2025.

Risk zones and reaction times

The installation sites follow technical criteria set out in the dam failure studies. They are areas where there would be less than 30 minutes to act. The sirens give an immediate audible warning to the people at risk, under the INUNCAT plan.

System specifications

  • Each siren has 6 directional horns configured for its surroundings to maximise effective coverage.
  • The support mast is 6 metres high and anchored on a reinforced concrete footing.
  • The installation includes an IP65 industrial control cabinet and dedicated surge protection against lightning.
  • In Bescanó, two sirens have been placed in residential areas and one near the industrial estate.
  • All units can play pre-recorded voice messages as well as standard alarm signals.

Lafcarr's role

Lafcarr supplied the acoustic modules, control cabinets, batteries, antennas and communication components.

The sirens were made at our facilities in Spain and individually tuned to the acoustic conditions of each site, ensuring effective warning without unnecessary disturbance.

A significant improvement in response capability

The Selva district is thus moving towards full coverage against risks from hydraulic infrastructure. Work like this buys time in critical situations and improves coordination between authorities, dam operators and the public.
